2017 Tannat Block 8 Vineyard Reserve
Of all the wines we produce, our 2017 Tannat is perhaps the least classically "Virginian" in stye. Born of an exceptional vineyard in Orange County, and forged in the crucible of one of the finest vintages in state history, this wine's opaque purple color, tongue-staining richness, and bullet-proof fruit are far more redolent of California than the Old Dominion. Hedonistic ripeness and considerable alcohol strength, the wine does not want for complexity or interest. A combination of partial whole-cluster fermentation (for brightness and spice), advanced lees work (for roundness and polish) and a diverse oaking regimen has produced a wine of considerable aromatic nuance given its sheer size. Bottled without fining or filtration, our Tannat's perfect trinity of succulent berry fruit, leavening acidity and massive tannic structure all but guarantees a long, gentile aging curve spanning at least a decade.
